Two-Factor Authentication (ESS)
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security measure that requires you to provide two forms of identification to log in. 2FA helps safeguard private information and keep you, your company, and your data safe.

Important: The biometric login feature is not available following the initial release of ESS 2FA. We recognize how valuable this functionality was for many users and are actively exploring options to reintroduce it in a future update.
In the meantime, if you're interested in speeding up the login process on your phone, visit our Remember Login Credentials (ESS) page for instructions.
How 2FA Works at Checkwriters
In addition to using a password to log into Checkwriters ESS, we require at least one supplemental form of identification. You can choose to have up to three additional forms of verification. The options for additional verification are as follows:
- Authenticator App: Download Authy or Google Authenticator. Register either app with Checkwriters, and it will provide a one-time code to enter when logging in.
- Phone Authentication: You will be prompted to enter a one-time code sent as a text message to your mobile phone.
- FOB Authentication: Enter the one-time code that appears on the face of a Checkwriters FOB Key. Ask your employer if this is an available option.
ESS App Users: After enrolling in 2FA, you have the option to select "Remember my Device". Your mobile device will then be trusted for the next 60 days, and you will not need to reauthenticate with 2FA until the 60 days have passed.
Enroll in 2FA
During the login process, you will be prompted to enroll in each of the three 2FA options with Yes and No buttons. Follow the steps below to enroll in each of the 2FA options during login.
Warning: You MUST enroll in AT LEAST ONE of the 2FA options. If you select No for each option, you will be prompted to start again.
Best Practice: Enroll in multiple 2FA options (for example, Phone AND Authenticator App) so you always have a backup option when logging in.
Authenticator App
- If you choose to enroll in Authenticator App 2FA during login, select Yes when prompted.
- Download Authy or Google Authenticator from your phone's app store.
- Using one of the authenticator apps, scan the QR code or enter the key code from Checkwriters into the app’s appropriate field. If you're logging in using our ESS mobile app, you can also tap the link on the setup page.
- The app will then provide you with a one-time, six-digit code. Enter this code in the Code field of Checkwriters. Select Verify App.
Phone
- If you choose to enroll in Phone 2FA during login, select Yes when prompted.
- Enter your mobile phone number in the Cell Phone field. This must be a mobile phone number that can receive text messages. Select Register Phone.
- Check your mobile phone for a text from Checkwriters (413) 203-6286, like the one below. This text will provide a one-time, six-digit code.
- Enter the six-digit code into the Code field. Select Verify Phone.
Note: If you do not receive a code, select Resend the code via text message. If you still do not receive a code, select Didn't receive a text message? Call Me instead. You will then receive a phone call that will read out the code twice and automatically disconnect.
Still not receiving the code? Let’s troubleshoot!
- Verify that the phone number you’ve entered is correct.
- Make sure you haven’t accidentally blocked the (413) 203-6286 phone number Checkwriters texts you from.
- Make sure you your phone has service.
- You may need to restart your phone (turn it all the way off, then back on), due to a carrier issue.
FOB Key
Note: To proceed with FOB enrollment, you must have a Checkwriters-issued FOB Key. Ask your employer if this is an available option.
- If you choose to enroll in FOB Key 2FA during login, select Yes when prompted.
- Enter the number on the back of your FOB Key in the FOB Number field. Select Register FOB.
- Press the button on the front of the FOB Key. The FOB Key will then display a one-time, 6-digit code.
- Enter the 6-digit in the Code field. Select Verify FOB.
Reset 2FA
After logging in to ESS, you can manage your 2FA by resetting your enrollment selections.
- In ESS, select your Name/Profile Picture.
- Select Reset. The next time you log in to ESS, you will be prompted to Enroll in 2FA once again.
