Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes for employees

Some states require a SOC code for every employee reported on the state unemployment return.

The following states require a Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code for every employee reported on these state unemployment returns.

As of 7/10/2024, within Checkwriters, the SOC code will be a required field for all new hires that live and work in these states.

  • Alaska
  • Indiana
  • Louisiana
  • South Carolina
  • Washington
  • West Virginia

To fulfill this requirement, if you have not already done so- you must add a SOC code for each employee who is liable for unemployment wage reporting in any of those states.

SOC codes must be in the system for existing employees on or before the last business day of each quarter for reporting.

States may assess a penalty on the employer if SOC codes are not reported.

Entering a SOC Code for an Employee

SOC Codes are captured on the employee Demographics screen in the Additional Info section.

To see a list of codes, this link is accessible on the Employee Demographics screen, and included here for reference: Search for SOC codes on the US BLS website.
